Week thirty six

A week of working with leftovers. I made a couple of collages – one using the discarded sheets from the backdrawn monoprints I made a few weeks ago, and the other was cut from the test sheet I used for my rubber stamp daily drawings from last month. Saving things from the bin seems to be a recurring them this year! I think both collages have potential to be developed further… the monoprint collage could be turned into a relief print, and the stamp collage could be made into a set of badges.

I’ve had mixed success growing dahlias for the first time this year. In an ongoing battle with the slugs I thought it was only the black ones (dahlias not slugs!) that had prevailed. But one plucky fellow has beaten the onslaught of the molluscs. It’s an absolute marvel and looks like a 1950’s swimming hat. It has strengthened my resolve to try again next year. In the meantime, I’m deadheading the black dahlias and freezing them for the dyepot...

Really inspired by a recent visit to see the Picasso and Paper exhibition at the Royal Academy. An amazing range of work on display... I particularly enjoyed seeing the paper cuts and collages up close. Really worth a visit if you’re in London... on ‘til 13 April…

Spreading the book-ish word

Some lovely photos from artist Carmen Garaghon’s residency trip to Rajasthan in India. She came along to the folded book workshop Cathey Webb and I ran at the MakeSpace at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery back in August, and now has been teaching the trouser book (with folded cover) format to people she’s met out in India. She’s planning on leaving behind her stamps and rollers in the hope that they can set up their own book making collective. Very exciting! You can find out more about Carmen’s travels on Instagram (@carmengaraghon)

A very enjoyable day spent at a workshop run by artist Daniel Lehan - it was accompanying his exhibition 'DAY PAGES' which has just opened at UWE Bower Ashton Library, and inspired by his practice of keeping a daily diary comprising of collage and typewritten text. It was a great excuse to dust off my old typewriter, and also really inspiring to hear about the different ways he collects and creates content for both his diaries and books. The tapping of old typewriters was a soothing soundtrack to the day (not sure other people using the library agreed!)

Had a lot of fun at the last meeting of the Artists’ Book Club at UWE last week - they’d hired a couple of badge makers from Bristol Scrapstore. Great to see some of my rubber stamp patterns transformed into a pinnable format.
